Real Madrid smash record to sign Bale

Real Madrid have confirmed the world-record signing of Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspurs.

After almost two months of assumption and negotiation, Real and Spurs both announced the transfer on Sunday evening.

Press realize Real have paid 100 million euros (£85.3million) for Gareth Bale's signature.

Real Madrid announced on their website: "Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement for the transfer of Gareth Bale, who will be contracted to the club for the next six seasons."

The contract is subject to Bale passing a medical with the nine-time European champions, with all other details set on.

Real say the 24-year-old will be presented as their new player at the Santiago Bernabeu on Monday at midday UK time.

Tottenham Spurs had been in discussion with Real for much of the summer and did not field him for the 1-0 north London derby defeat against Arsenal earlier on Saturday.

Speaking after his side lost 1-0 to Gunners at the Emirates Stadium, manager Andre Villas-Boas said of Bale: "He is going to join Real Madrid so we wish him all the best.

"He is an extremely magnificent player.

"He has left us with few great memories from previous season which every Tottenham fan cherishes, but he has moved on and we will move on as well."

Spurs had at first resisted Real's advances, but chairman Daniel Levy explained he had no choice but to let the Welshman go after the player's head was turned.

"Gareth Bale was a player we had absolutely no purpose of selling as we look to construct for the future," Levy told Tottenham's website.

"He is a player whose career we have developed and he was only a year into his new four-year contract.

"Such has been the notice from Real Madrid and so great is Gareth's aspiration to join them, that we have taken the sight that the player will not be suitably dedicated to our campaign in the current season.

"We have, therefore, with great unwillingness, agreed to this sale and do so in the knowledge that we have an remarkably strong squad to which we have added no fewer than seven top internationals. More significantly, we have an immense team spirit and a dressing room that is hungry for success.

"We wish Gareth Bale all the best in the future and he shall always be welcome at (White Hart) Lane."
