Borges Willian on the travel around London!
With both Spurs and Chelsea looking to finalize the deal, we take a look as to which team really wants this Brazilian play-maker and what can he bring to the table.
He is 25 years old, has played for Corinthians, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Anzhi. Primarily a left-winger he can also play in the center taking up the role of a play-maker. So, what does he bring to the club he will join?
1st thing that comes up to mind when signing an offensive player is goals. So, does Willian bring goals with him, well over all in his career he has scored 40 goals in 258 appearances. That is quite clearly a decent return for some one who is entering his prime years. Furthermore, and this is a very impressive stat, he has 71 assists to his name in those appearances. That is just 6 assists less than what Gareth Bale has provided in 270 appearances so far in his career. So, the lad does bring about the provider tag with him.
Valued at 30m pounds, he brings flair and brings stats so definitely he is an improvement for every squad. Plus he is Brazilian so individual brilliance is always around the corner.
Now, which of the clubs really require the talent of this man. Definitely every team will jump on the opportunity to get his signature but the shortlist has come down to two London clubs, Chelsea and Spurs. While Spurs looked all set to get him, Chelsea have reignited their interest in the man they have been chasing for quite some time now and it is no secret that Willian always wanted to move to the Bridge. But the question arises: DO CHELSEA REQUIRE HIS SERVICES?
If the answer to that question is yes, this is how the Chelsea offensive midfield will look like, and keep in mind the EPL rule of 25 man squad and a quota of home-grown players, and definitely Willian is not home-grown.
KdB, Schurrle, Mata, Oscar, Hazard, and Moses. Willian is an upgrade to KdB and Schurrle but including him would mean the end of Moses, and possibly lesser play time for MAZACAR as well. Furthermore, even Willian wont be confirmed game-time as the trio termed as MAZACAR are pretty good when they are in their flow. Plus, youngsters like KdB and Schurrle are also starting to impress. So, why splash out 30m+ on another attacking midfielder when clearly the requirement is either a defensive midfielder or a potent CF.
On the other hand, with the Gareth Bale saga poised to finish with him moving to Madrid, this is how Spurs offensive midfield lines up:
Lennon, Chadli, Sigurdsson, and thats it. Paulinho, Dembele, Capoue and all are all defensive midfielders. So, who actually requires some one like Willian? Spurs. Who will get plenty of game-time and importance and less competition at Spurs? Willian as he is a definite improvement on all the three mentioned.
So, the question beckons, why is Willian choosing Chelsea who also have a history of producing flop transfers (are we forgetting German Messi Marin), why choosing a team where your future is not secured and you are faced with an uphill task of forcing your way through that set of quality? While on the other hand you have the opportunity to slot right in to a team's playing XI and become their main man for the season.
For Borges Willian his decision in the coming days will decide which turn his future takes, will he be the next Oscar or the next Marin?
