2014 World Cup qualifying tournament is identical to the previous four editions. All CONMEBOL national teams will play against each other twice on a home-and-away basis in a single group. The top four teams will automatically qualify for the finals

Uruguay are the current reigning South American champions, having won the 2011 Copa America. Uruguay have won the Copa America a record 15 times. The team has twice won the FIFA World Cup including the first World Cup in 1930 as hosts, defeating Argentina 4–2 in the final. They won their second title in 1950 upsetting hosts Brazil 2–1 in the Final Match which received an attendance higher than any football match ever.

The team has reached the second round of the World Cup on four occasions (in 1986, 1998, 2002 and 2010). The 2010 trip also featured their first appearance in the quarterfinals. Paraguay's only major tournament victories have come in theCopa Américacopa america, in which they triumphed in 1953 and in 1979. South Africa 2010 was Paraguay's fourth consecutive trip to the World Cup final tournament, having previously qualified for the final at France 1998, Korea/Japan 2002, and Germany 2006.
